What is "The Underground Nightclub"?
The Underground is a roleplaying website dedicated to the upcoming MMO, The Secret World. If you wish to know the In Character version of what is Underground, please read it's bio.
What is "The Secret World"?
"The Secret World" is a Massively Multiplayer Online Game currently in development by Funcom. The game takes place in a completely modern setting, in which conspiracy theories, theology, and urban myths are all a reality that you, as an agent of one of the three Factions, must deal with.
For more information, please visit the official website.
Do I have to be interested in "The Secret World" to Role-play ?
Absolutely not! Sure, if you're interested in the game, it's even better - But even if you have no plan on purchasing the game come release, you are still welcome to roleplay. "The Secret World" is simply a setting we use on these forums, and is not in any way a requirement to post here.
What are these "Factions" of which you speak?
As a player in "The Secret World", you are an agent of one of the three playable factions: The Illuminati, the Dragon, and the Templar. If you are unfamiliar with the philosophies and attitudes of each of these three factions, please read about them, here.
Do I have to be a member of one of these factions?
Out of fairness to the other roleplayers in the forum, we ask that you please, at least temporarily, decide upon one of the three factions for each of your individual roleplay characters. There is no faction that is superior to another, and the factions are not intended to be an inhibitor to your character's attitude or abilities; they are merely a plot device.
Your character does not have to be the proto-archetypical example of the faction's philosophy by any means; you can just as easily create a character that is on shaky terms with their own faction as you can a character that eat, sleeps, and breathes it's cause. Whatever you think is more appropriate to your character.
Is this a Cabal (guild) ?
No, we're not a cabal. We're all members of different factions, and from the information given, at the moment it seems that there is to be no cross-faction Cabals. However we will surely have guilds spawn from this forum, but at the moment Underground itself is just a hub for people to role-play in.
What is "Chatzy"?
Chatzy is an online chatroom host that allows players to speak through instant messaging (similar to AIM or IRC). It does not require registration and, conveniently, it comes with a nice dice simulator, which makes it perfect for Live RP's.
For more information, please see the Chatzy thread.
What are "Live RP's"?
Live RP events are a special feature we have on The Underground; they are live events hosted through the chatzy server in which you roleplay your character's actions in real-time, reacting to the actions of the NPC's and the other players as they are happening. The events are run by a GM, and damage, dodge, etc., is calculated by the random dice mechanism in chatzy.
These events are unique in that it enables you the oppurtunity to react as your character would react, and step into the shoes of your own character's thoughts and reactions to a situation.
How do I sign up for a Live RP event?
No sign up is necessary, just be present for the start of the session. Upcoming formal events are listed on our "Upcoming Events" page.
In addition, at any time we might decide to start an informal "social" roleplaying session (basically, whenever enough willing people happen to be loitering around chatzy), in which character simply engage in non-combat discussion and interaction; feel free to join any informal RP should you stop in while they are happening.
How do I begin forum roleplaying?
Very easily; just join any ongoing RP you think you'd enjoy being a part of. No introductory story or anything of the like is required.
We would, however, appreciate it if you would quickly make a "character bio sheet" for the reference of the other players. Plus, it makes for a richer story, when the other roleplayers know the specifics of who they're interacting with.
Are there any guidelines when creating my character?
Lurk around a bit; read a few of the other bios, and even a few of the posts in ongoing roleplays. You'll soon get a good feel for the average "power level" of your typical Underground roleplayer. We are a community that generally operates at a low power level, where character's abilities are concerned; our belief is that, the more difficult a fight, the more fun it is to play out.
That is not to say we expect your character to be a weakling; on the contrary, we simply request a rounded character, with strengths, as well as flaws. For more information on our "power level policy", please read, Tom's Guide to Character Creation.
Any other advice?
We would like to believe we are a mature, open-minded, and very friendly community. So long as you remain curteous, and respectful, we welcome any and all new perspectives and roleplaying styles. Please, don't feel self-conscious around us; we're all here to help each other out. Have fun, and write to your heart's content.
